05 Free Weekend Playdate Ideas For Kids @ Orange County

When you do not feel like going far or spending a lot, I hope these activities can help diversify your kids’ calendar.

1. Free Kids Craft Workshop @ Home Depot Every 1st Saturday, 9am

My son loves creating new wooden toys from the Home Depot craft kit. There are multiple toys that he keeps playing with, such as the fire struck, the Valentine pen box, … I would say, though, that 5+ year-old kids will enjoy them more, as they are more likely to complete the activity without parents’ help.

You can check out the workshop details here and register.

2. Free Train Rides Every 3rd Full Weekend Each Month @ Orange County Model Engineers

My friend recommended this activity to us, and my son always feels excited about riding the train. It is both recreational and educational. The ride is longer and more enjoyable than many other local paid train rides. The track runs up and down the hills, offering wonderful views, so even adults enjoy the ride. Their Free Public Train Rides take place on the 3rd full weekend of each month. This is the ONLY time the railroad is open to the public. A complete list of dates can be found HERE.

3. Orange County / Irvine Libraries

These local libraries usually have group play sessions on Saturday mornings. My son enjoyed some new toys and played with new friends whenever we were able to go. Occasionally, they organize some events for kids, such as crafts and story times. You can check out the local library website for the full calendar.

4. Irvine Community & Neighborhood Parks / Swimming Pools

Irvine offers about 22 community parks and 40 neighborhood parks. Our favorite parks are Great Park, Jeffrey Open Trail, and Irvine Adventure Playground. My son loves riding the free carousel at Great Park, riding a bicycle or scooter on the Jeffrey Open Trail, and playing with giant blocks at Adventure Playground. The Great Park also hosts tons of activities during holidays.

5. Quail Hill & Shady Canyon Hiking Trails

The best time to visit Quail Hill and Shady Canyon is spring, when all the hills are green and lively. My son loved riding his balance bike along these trails. It can be very windy so make sure to dress warm for your kids. Bring plenty of water and let’s go outside!

This list is such a great reminder that childhood magic doesn’t require big budgets or big plans. Free, local adventures such as crafts, libraries, parks, trails often create the memories kids hold onto the longest.

Thank you for visiting my blog, Peachy and Clementine. Yes, kids don’t actually need super expensive toys and trips. They can make toys out of anything anywhere. 🙂
