A Spring Getaway to Chino Hills: Finding Magic in the Simple Things

We took our two little ones to Chino Hills on a gorgeous April day during Spring Break. Even though there wasn’t a “super bloom” this year, the hills still greeted us with vibrant carpets of yellow and white mustard flowers, elegant clusters of pink buckwheat, and fields of wild oats shimmering under the golden sun.

A Taste of Home on the Trail

Before heading out to explore the breezy hills, we enjoyed a little family tradition: lunch in the great outdoors. We packed a small bag with sticky rice, pork floss, seaweed, and some crisp cucumber—the perfect fuel to get us ready for a few miles on the Bane Ridge Trail.

We didn’t feel the need to trek the full 5.5 miles; we simply hiked until our hearts were content. For me, “content” meant soaking in the view of the rolling hills and walking through fields of wild oats swaying in the wind. After about 3 miles, we headed back, stopping to snap a few more family photos to tuck away as memories.

The Magic of the Simple Things

You know what? There is something truly magical about seeing the pure excitement and eagerness on my 3-year-old’s face. Watching them scurry around to look at wildflowers, tilting their head to hear birds chirping in the branches, or chasing a butterfly across the hill… it’s everything.

It’s not about fancy toys. It’s not about expensive theme parks. I truly feel that this is the perfect childhood I want for my kids—one where they learn to observe, appreciate, and fall in love with the natural world.

The most surprising part? My little guy handled all three miles entirely on his own two feet. No carrying, no ‘piggyback’ requests—just pure determination and curiosity leading the way.

If we can do it with a 3-year-old leading the way for 3 miles, you can too! Grab your favorite snacks, lace up those sneakers, and head out to Chino Hills State Park this weekend. Whether you hike a little or a lot, the rolling hills and wild oats are waiting for you. Trust me, the ‘getaway’ is worth it!
